Meredith Blunt at work with ink and watercolor

Hi! I'm Meredith.

It is a joy to be known as Bird Nerd and Missus Blunt. I'm a Canadian artist based in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario, and I love working in ink and watercolor.

My art celebrates the birds around us, the ones we see every day and the ones that visit just once a season. I hope to draw you in with delicate but energetic detail and the big personalities of my inspirations.

The Bird a Day Challenge

In 2023, I set out to paint a bird from the Waterloo Region every single day for the entire year. That challenge, covering all 320+ species listed for the region, changed everything. It deepened my art practice, connected me with an incredible community of bird lovers, and gave me a catalog of over 500 unique bird paintings.

What started as a local project became something much bigger. People followed along on Instagram and Mastodon, sharing their own bird sightings, identifying species, and celebrating the birds right in their own backyards, no matter where they lived.

Community & Conservation

Birds need more than admiration; they need advocates. I'm honoured to serve as co-chair of Bird Friendly City Kitchener, working to make our community safer for the birds that call it home. I also lead bird-themed events and guided sketch sessions, bringing people together to observe, draw, and appreciate the natural world.

I believe that noticing birds is a way of paying attention to the world around us. And when we pay attention, we start to care. And when we care, we act.

The Art

Every piece starts with observation: watching how a bird holds its head, the way light catches a feather, the attitude in a glance. I sketch in ink first, building structure with fine lines, then bring the bird to life with watercolor. The result is something that feels both precise and alive.

Prints, originals, and commissions are all available. Visit the gallery to browse, or get in touch to chat about a custom piece.
