American Robins created by my students on April 18th, I love the familiar and unique balance of each bird

Hello friends! I recently had the wonderful opportunity to teach a drawing class at Homer Watson House and Gallery, focusing on capturing the beauty of a classic springtime bird to celebrate Earth Day.

The Class Experience

The class was held in the historic setting of Homer Watson House, which provided such an abundant backdrop for Bird Friendly Kitchener’s Earth Day Bird Walk. Participants ranged from beginners to more experienced artists, all eager to learn about bird anatomy and the smooshy geometry of birds!

We started with basic shapes, then moved on to adding details like feathers and expressions. I shared tips on observing birds in nature and translating those observations onto paper.

We drew and chatted about the charm of the American Robin! From it’s giggle worthy scientific name Turdus Migratorius to how early European settlers came to name a thrush after their familiar robin, a flycatcher.
